Live 8 - Make Poverty History

July 18, 2005

Dear friends

Many of us will be fortunate to be able to afford a holiday this year. I hope you have an enjoyable time, whether you stay in this country or travel abroad. This year, more than previous years I am aware of how lucky we are in the affluent, developed world, to spend thousands of pounds on several holidays each year. At the same time, there are millions of people who cannot afford to feed or educate their children day by day, let alone having a holiday.

That’s why the MAKE POVERTY HISTORY campaign is so important. Yes, we could close our eyes or turn our back on the poor (as many did during Christian Aid week, to their shame) or we can see how important it is for all people, made in the image of God, to enjoy a decent standard of living. In Africa and elsewhere in the developing world, many live lives that can only be described as indecent because of grinding poverty.

Let us hope the G8 meeting in July, the momentum generated by the live8 concerts and the political determination of our Government may combine to begin to address the issues of extreme poverty. But it’s not just about what governments are prepared to do. What about you? What are you willing to do to help make a difference? Think about it whilst you enjoy the sun on holiday. Have a great time!
