Children and Young People
Baptism welcomes a child or adult into the family of the church and since the Church on Fairford Leys opened for services (June 2000 in St Mary’s School) 180 people have been baptised! The majority of these have been children – we have a strong commitment to help our children to grow in the Christian faith. Activities for children and young people comprise:
Children’s Activities
Children are a very important part of the church family and are warmly welcomed.
The children meet each Sunday morning except the first Sunday in the month, when we join the Church family in a family service.
On the other weeks we join the main service at the beginning and then go out to do our own activity during the second hymn. We rejoin the service in time for Communion.
We have seen a huge increase in the number of children attending our Church, which is great as they are our future. Due to the increasing numbers we have recently increased the number of groups to 3 cater for the following ages:
- age 0 – 4/5 (up to the September before starting school)
- age 4/5 – 7/8
- age 7/8 – upwards
The groupings reflect school years so that blocks of children would move up at the same time and not just when their birthdays occur. These groupings will be flexible depending on individual circumstances.
The activities take place in the cloisters area, immediately outside with the 0-4/5s using the little room. The children leave the service during the second hymn (as now) and we will have a joint prayer and song before splitting into our groups.
All groups are staffed by volunteer parents. Children learn about the teachings of Jesus through Bible stories, creative activities, songs and games. There are also plenty of toys to keep the children amused. Parents/carers are welcome to join their children. Each week children are given activity sheets to take home, which show what they have been learning and provide ideas for parents so they can work with their children throughout the week. We also encourage parents to join the rota of parent volunteers.
Please contact Bridget Lumb or any of the leaders for further information
During family services parents are very welcome to use the equipment available in the room off the cloisters.
YNOTT
Youth Not Over The Top (they chose the title!) is a fortnightly group for ages 12+ which meets at the church on Sunday evenings 7.30 - 9.00pm for discussion of issues relevant to young people growing up in a world of bewildering choice of beliefs and values.
